EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITY

Since the first days of Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Mission foundation together with the rehearsals of church choir Father Benyamin conducted lessons teaching modern Aramaic language and writing in Tbilisi and in the village of Dzveli Kanda. There were several groups in the village of Dzveli Kanda and the lessons were held in public school twice a week. The lesson duration was one hour. The necessity of teaching the language was caused by the fact that majority of Assyrians could neither read nor write in native language. The lessons brought about fruitful results. The children learned to read and write in native Aramaic language.

CHURCH SCHOOL OF SAINT MARTYR MAR SHEMMON BAR SABBAE

The great wish of taking part in the educational process as well as to broaden activities in this sphere led to the decision of the Mission to open Sunday school. The idea was carried out and in 2000 Assyrian-Chaldean Catholic Mission in Georgia founded Sunday school of St. Martyr Mar Shemmon Bar Sabbae.

The lessons were held twice a week (on Saturday and Sunday) in university classes of Cathedral of Ascension of St. Mary. About 75-80 students from Tbilisi, Gardabani and the Village of Dzveli Kanda visited school annually despite their confessional belonging.

Thanks to the educational activities of the school and Mission during these 23 years many Assyrians got learned their native language. Despite of the spiritual twist of the school, lessons in other subjects, that were important for the integration of our children into modern society, were held. The curriculum of different years, together with the lessons of modern Aramaic language, Eastern chants and history of religion, included English and Georgian languages as well as computer courses.

The talent of children, their skills, peculiarities and character as well as their attitude towards school and ability of caring out their responsibilities was revealed at school. Later on gifted children become the beneficiaries of education projects of Mission. We hope that in future the university graduates who are ex-students of our school will share their experience and knowledge with younger generation.

As it was already mentioned above our students work as volunteers conducting lessons at church school and taking part in humanitarian projects together with children. Beside education the aim of our school is consolidation of our people. School must not only be the place where they study but also the place where they learn to communicate, make friends, love and respect each other. Students from Gardabani, Kanda and various districts of Tbilisi met each other and became friends at our school.
